  • Recognition and Appreciation: While we respect your privacy, we would be honored to recognize your generosity through our donor publications and events.
  • Legacy of Care: Your contribution will provide long-term benefits to future generations of older adults ensuring they receive the highest quality of care and support in Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care.

Your Planned Gift Makes a Difference

  • A gift of $25,000 could support a special wellness program or activity.
  • A gift of a life insurance policy can create a lasting endowment to ensure future resident care and staffing.
  • A bequest of $100,000 can provide funding for scholarships, ensuring no senior is left behind due to financial hardship.

See Your Impact

Your gifts make a difference. YOU make a difference.

Learn about the different ways your contributions have supported JSL residents in the JSL Annual Reports.

A planned giving program offers you a way to make long-lasting contributions to the JSL Foundation through thoughtful, future-focused gifts. These gifts help secure our residents’ well-being, enhance services, and support the long-term goals of our agency.

Why Planned Giving?

  • Create a lasting legacy: You can leave a significant impact, ensuring future generations of older adults receive exceptional care.
  • Tax advantages: Depending on the type of gift, you may receive tax deductions or avoid capital gains taxes.
  • A choice of giving methods: Planned gifts can be made through bequests, charitable trusts, and other strategies that allow you to support JSL in a way that works for you.

Before making a planned gift, consult with your financial or legal advisor to understand the best option for your financial situation and goals.

Choose from one of the planned giving options (bequest, CRT, life insurance, etc.)  that works best for you and your family.

Types of Planned Gifts

Planned Giving Options

Description: A bequest allows you to leave a gift in your will or living trust to the JSL Foundation either as a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or a residual gift after other bequests.

Benefits:

  • The gift is flexible and can be modified at any time.
  • You maintain control over your assets during your lifetime.
  • There are estate tax deductions for the value of the gift.
  • It’s a meaningful way to make a lasting impact without parting with assets today.

Description: A CRT allows you to transfer assets to the trust, which then pays you income for life or for a term of years. Upon your death, the remaining balance goes to The JSL Foundation.

Benefits:

  • You receive income for life or a set period.
  • Your charitable deduction is based on the value of the remainder interest.
  • You reduce capital gains taxes when appreciated assets are donated.

Description: This arrangement allows you to transfer assets in exchange for a guaranteed income stream for life, with the remainder benefiting JSL.

Benefits:

  • You receive guaranteed lifetime income.
  • There is a charitable tax deduction at the time of the gift.
  • Payments are often partially tax-free.
  • The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit holds your CGA. We can connect you with the Senior Endowment Development Manager, Susan Feldman, if you are considering this gift.

Description: You can name the JSL Foundation as the beneficiary of your retirement accounts, such as an IRA or 401(k).

Benefits:

  • Simple to implement by contacting the account administrator.
  • Potentially avoid estate taxes on retirement accounts.
  • There is no need to update your will or trust, just a beneficiary form.

Description: You can designate the JSL Foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, or you may transfer ownership of an existing policy.

Benefits:

  • Potential to make a large gift for a relatively low initial cost.
  • The value of the policy may be eligible for a charitable tax deduction.
  • Life insurance gifts are straightforward and easy to manage.
